Candidacy for the Procedure

Endoscopic sinus surgery is often performed to treat chronic sinusitis, which involves persistent inflammation of the nose and sinuses. Patients with acute sinusitis, caused by the common cold and lasting only for a temporary period, can usually be treated with antibiotics. There are several other reasons that your doctor may recommend endoscopic treatment, including:

  • Recurring sinus infections
  • Sinus infection that spreads to the eye, face, or brain
  • Nasal polyps or tumors
  • Leakage of brain fluid into the nose
  • Tear duct blockage

We will carefully assess your current health conditions and past medical history to determine if endoscopic sinus surgery is the right choice for you. This may involve imaging studies and other diagnostic tests.

How is the procedure performed?

Prior to undergoing treatment, you may be asked to take certain antibiotics or steroids, and to avoid certain medications that may cause bleeding. We will administer local or general anesthesia, which your doctor will discuss with you prior to the procedure.

The endoscopic approach allows your doctor to treat your sinuses without making facial incisions, which can lead to reduced recovery times and optimal patient outcomes.

Your surgeon will insert a small lighted camera called an endoscope into your nasal cavity through the nostril. This allows your doctor to view the internal anatomy on a large monitor. Depending on the nature of your sinus issue, your surgeon will then address the specific anatomy of your sinuses. This may involve using a balloon that is gradually inflated to widen the sinus opening. Specialized surgical instruments may be used to remove nasal polyps, tumors, or tissue that may be causing a blockage. The endoscopic approach allows your doctor to treat your sinuses without making facial incisions, which can lead to reduced recovery times and optimal patient outcomes.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Recovery

Recovery may involve minor discomfort and some bleeding during the first two weeks following surgery. You and your doctor will discuss the need for follow-up visits after the procedure, which may be necessary to monitor your progress and ensure that you are healing properly. Your surgeon will instruct you thoroughly on what to do while you are recovering, which may include packing your nose with gauze, taking certain medications, irrigating the nasal passages with saltwater rinses, and avoiding strenuous activities. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions in order to minimize the risk of complications or re-infection. Most patients find that the procedure offers immense relief from the painful symptoms of sinusitis.
